Fitness-Based Therapy

Fitness-Based Therapy

What is fitness-based therapy?

Fitness-Based Therapy is grounded on the principle that exercise can improve both mental and physical health. It’s a structured, individualized program where a certified Registered Health & Exercise Practitioner will support individuals transitioning into recovery and/or wanting to achieve their optimal mental and physical health.

How is fitness-based therapy different from private or group training?

While personal/group training and fitness-based therapy similarly focus on improving one’s physical strength, endurance, and overall health; fitness-based therapy (FBT) is different in that it puts more emphasis on an individualized fitness care program that transitions into a recovery program. FBT helps with mental health in addition to the physical aspect. It is a recovery program with goal setting, nutrition counselling, and personal/group training.

The structure of fitness-based therapy is different from a regular fitness program. With a referral, we will work hand-in-hand with your physiotherapist, psychologist, or other healthcare provider to ensure that your recovery plan is seamlessly integrated. Your FBT program will guide you through specific phases: Initial Assessment, Plan, Implement, Progress Assessment, and Supporting Independent Continuation of the program.

Another way that fitness-based therapy is unique is that we can work sessions into our respite therapy program. Youth 18 years old or younger can often receive therapy sessions for free with the support of funding options with a referral
(contact us to learn more about how to get funding).

How are fitness-based therapy sessions facilitated?

The best thing about fitness-based therapy is that we can meet you where you’re most comfortable! If it’s more convenient or safe to meet at your home, we’ll come to you. If you have a membership at a local gym, we can meet you there! Want to take advantage of the beautiful weather or our local outdoor gyms or parks, we can meet you there too.

Sessions are typically one hour long and occur once a week. After your initial consultation, we’ll develop a program length and frequency based on your unique  needs and recovery program recommendations.
