Respite Relief

Respite Relief

What is respite relief?

Although families take great pride in providing care for their loved ones so they may remain at home, that responsibility can take a physical and emotional toll on the primary caregiver. Strong Minds is able to offer respite relief for family members who care for or those suffering from mental health and substance abuse.

During respite relief sessions, we’ll support the family as a whole while providing specific care for the individual, including teaching life skills such as relationship building, ordering food, grocery shopping, assistance with school work, budgeting, and social skills.

Funding is often available for youth 18 years old and younger with a referral (complete the contact form below to see if you qualify).

What are the benefits of respite relief?

Respite relief has been shown to help prolong the health and well-being of the person receiving care, as well as provide a positive and enriching experience for the caregiver. While we offer assistance to the individual receiving respite, we’ll also help support the whole family dynamic. We recognize that caregivers are an essential part of the health and development of the child, so we’ll do what we can to support the family as a whole.

How is respite relief facilitated?

Respite relief is offered on a case-by-case basis, providing care for a few hours or for overnight stays. We’ll support you where you need it most, whether it’s a day outing or staying in the comfort of your own home.

Since supporting the mental health and development of the individual is part of respite relief, we can help with life skills such as grocery shopping, cooking, and nutritional counselling; however, for the fun trip out, we do like to support local businesses whenever possible.

Respite relief works wonderfully with our fitness-based therapy program, which means that we can easily incorporate fun, physical activities into our respite relief sessions. From simple walks around the neighbourhood to supported sessions at the gym, we’ll encourage an active lifestyle with those in our care.

Depending on the needs of the client and the funding available, we can develop a schedule that works within your availability for intermittent or ongoing respite relief.
